Mayo Magnet School for Math Science and Technology hires Mr. Joshua Barcus as the New Director of Bands and Chorus.
Mr. Barcus has been selected as the next Band Director at Mayo Magnet School following a rigorous interview and evaluation process. Mr. Barcus is a highly qualified Director. He was formerly the Director of Music at Virtus Academy in Florence, South Carolina. Additionally, he served as the Music Director of the newly constructed Lamar-Spaulding Elementary School in Lamar, SC.
Principal Stephania Lenard exclaimed, "I am ecstatic to be working with Mr. Barcus! I am confident that Mr. Barcus will contribute significantly to the culture and environment of Mayo. Mr. Barcus has not only expressed a desire to improve our music programs but also to collaborate closely with his soon-to-be colleagues on the development of other campus programs and initiatives.
Darlington High School Director of Bands Brendan Johnson considers Joshua Barcus to be the PERFECT candidate for Mayo Magnet School. He stated, "I could not have imagined or suggested a more qualified candidate than Mr. Joshua Barcus. He has served on my staff and made significant contributions to the students, parents, and personnel of the Marching Falcons. This was an excellent choice!"
Joshua Barcus was born in Darlington, South Carolina. 2013 marks his graduation from Mayo Magnet School for Math, Science, and Technology. Mr. Barcus attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, where he joined Kappa Kappa Psi, the National Honorary Band Fraternity. After a year at USC, Joshua earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Music Performance from Alabama State University. His principal instrument was the alto saxophone, and he studied with Dr. Michael Pendowski. Joshua Barcus has performed at numerous venues, including the AMEA Intercollegiate Band in 2016 as a special guest wind quartet performer, churches, the Montgomery Performance Assessment, and the Capitol Sounds Wind ensemble in Montgomery, Alabama for three seasons. Mr. Barcus is currently pursuing a Masters of Ed Degree in Music Education from Anderson University in Anderson, SC.
2009 marked Joshua's entrance into the Marching Falcons of Darlington. He served as Saxophone Assistant Section Leader, Saxophone Section Leader, Woodwind Captain, and Band Captain during his membership. Former directors Xavier Whitfield, Billie Williamson, Cole Davis, and Christopher Simpson oversaw Joshua's work.
